The general movement of the stock market is usually measured by indexes
consisting of groups of stocks that are supposed to represent the entire stock market
or particular segments of it. These indexes differ from one another with respect to
stocks included in the index and the method employed in calculating the value of the
index. There are three weighting methods that are most often used in computing a
market index: Price weihting, capitalization weighting and equal weighting. The
indexes calculated by Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) are capitalization weighted
indexes.
